Genesee Valley Aero Modelers

Up

I took these pics 4/28 and 4/29 from the rest area just south of Route 20A and just east of Honeoye. They show a logging operation in which a large yellow helicopter spent several days airlifting bundles of logs out of the Mill Creek gully and dumping them right beside the rest area. A round trip to pick up and deliver the logs took only a few minutes. After the copter released the logs from its dangling cable, a crew on the ground moved in with a big "grabber" machine to retrieve and stack the logs and bundle the pickup cables for eventual re-delivery into the gully where they'd be used to lift more logs. I took these photos on 4/26 of the same operation. They actually worked from Saturday through Wednesday hauling logs with the helicopter. The company that did this job is Carson Helicopters out of Pennsylvania, the helicopter they use is a Sikorsky S51 capable of lifting loads up to 10,000 lbs. More information about them can be found on their web site at  http://www.carsonhelicopters.com/   This was quite an event for Honeoye, when I was at the rest area on Saturday there was a crowd of spectators I would estimate at 50 to 75 people the whole day. The last five pictures were taken Sunday May 4th and show the remaining pile of logs. They had already hauled away quite a few trailer loads by the time I took these, but it will give some idea of the number of logs hauled out by the helicopter in 3-1/2 days. Dave Beckwith
