Editor: Glenn Crocker As I am writing this, I just got back from the STARs Rally at the Olean airport. I would call it a mixed weekend. Friday and Saturday were very windy with little flying. Fortunately, the company was excellent and the "Dinner and Breakfast by Dave" were great. I’ve already requested reservations for next year. Sunday, the weather turned out to be a real winner. We had four members with planes up in there air including Joe Prato, Stuff Alger, Jim McBride and yours truly. My Tiger Moth got two good flights. I guess all the bugs have been worked out. I’m sure Glenn will have more information for you, with some pictures. On a different subject, I had an experience the other day that I’m sure will become more and more common. I was down at the local school with my wife, and as we were leaving, I noticed someone getting out of a car with a small RC plane. Being the curious type, I went over to see what he had and to introduce myself. He had a small GWS electric P51 that flew quite well. It turned out he was a former GVAM member, and after talking for a while he was pleased to learn that we now have several members that are flying small electrics. I of course recommended he consider rejoining the club and enjoy the benefits of our great field. My point on relaying this story to you is simply this, as park flyers become more common and inexpensive, there are going to be more people with then trying to enjoy flying as we do. As I see it, we have two choices we can make. One, we can ignore it as not really being a part of "Our" hobby, or we can see it as an opportunity to bring new people in and teach them about all the parts of the hobby. I think it would be a lot more fun being a mentor to the "kid" down the road than having him accidentally shoot you down. Just a thought…. At The Field By Glenn Crocker Well the rain has stopped, the weather has warmed up and the field has dried out. Is everybody happy? Now we hear it’s too hot the wind is too high and the ground is too hard. I guess you can’t please everyone. We have had good turnouts on Thursday evenings as well as every other night that the wind was down. The members have been taking advantage of the good flying weather. Dick Parshall and Spinner have been at the field frequently. Dick is having a good time with his electric Tiger Moth. We are still looking forward to him doing a low inverted pass with an outside loop on pullout. Tom Brown has been having difficulty with the hard ground. We are going to have to have a 2nd person to watch his left thumb on landing and smack it when he gives it left rudder just prior to touchdown. One of our newer members Danna Boothe has been doing extremely well on the buddy box and will shortly be flying without it. His son Matt got some stick time last week and did very well.We have even had a John Ward sighting a time or two this year when he can take time away from the new home construction. He and Eric give their electrics some exercise in the late evenings. Jim McBride does both electric and the screamers. David McBride has even made an appearance (must be between girlfriends). A group of eight GVAM members went to Olean this year. An Olean report will be in the next newsletter. Have fun. Keep the wheels on the bottom and watch out for Ned’s tree.
Thank you Abe If you think the field looks like a park you can thank Abe Sickles. He has mowed it twice this year and it really looks outstanding. When you see him let him know you appreciate his efforts.2003 Mowing Schedule
A Little Humor Center: Flight 2341, for noise abatement turn right 45 degrees. Flight 2341: But Center, we are at 35,000 feet. How much noise can we make up here. Center: Sir, have you ever heard the noise a 747 makes when it hits a 727. From P.O.R.K.S Air Mail Walt’s Bikin’ Shorts As you may or may not know, Walt Judd has taken up bike riding. As you also know a bike rider is not complete until he has all of the appropriate attire. In Walt’s case he needed a pair of Bikin’ shorts. I will leave out his adjectives or we will lose our "G" rating. Below is the latest in Bikin’ Shorts. I hope he is real careful where he wears them. Love and kisses from Walt. Or is it Love and swishes from Walt?
Plug It In Are you tired of trying to hold onto your wing in a breeze and not having much success in plugging the aileron servo plug into the receiver extension because you just don’t have enough hands? Here’s an answer. Take a piece of 1/8 ply, approximately a ¾ inch square, and cut a rectangular hole in it to fit the extension plug from the receiver. CyA the extension plug in the hole and attach the ply with the plug in an accessible location inside the fuse. This means one hand holds the wing, and the other hooks up the aileron plug. From Dixie Express I put this in a previous Newsletter but I thought since we were in the middle of flying season I would include it again.
