The Prez Sez . . .

It’s Winter Project Time!

I have my winter project picked out, do you?

I do have to admit; a lot of the fun in building a new model is looking at all the options available and trying to narrow it down to one choice. Of course, if your name is Charlie, you don’t narrow it down at all. You just build all of them. In my case, however, I started off by deciding what type and what size of plane I wanted to build. My last two planes were ARF’s, and this time I want to "build" something. Next, I looked all the kits currently available and didn’t find anything I really liked, so then I started looking at plans. Talk about a lot of choices, but after looking at several catalogs and many web sites I found the plane I want to build.

This winter’s project is a new challenge for me. A scratch built plane, well almost scratch built, I’ll explain a little later. I purchased the plans and have already spent several evenings starring at them. Glenn has given me several pointers and I’m sure will be asked for several more before I get done. The fiberglass parts have been ordered, and the wood has now been ordered. I hope to order some of the hardware soon.

What am I going to build? My second warbird, a Hawker Hurricane. The plans are by Brian Taylor and sold by Bob Holman. Bob also offers the cowling, canopy and spinner as well as laser cut wood for these plans. I purchased all of them, but I’m still waiting on the cowling, canopy and spinner. The laser cut wood includes all the pieces you would normally have to make patterns for and cut out yourself. A big time saver and the quality of the wood used looks very good. This explains what I meant by "almost scratch built". But this is definitely not a kit; there is no manual, just some notes on the plans, and a lot of decisions to make. This ought to keep me busy for a little while.

I’ll keep you posted on how it’s going, and I’m looking forward to hearing about your winter projects.

Happy landings,

Max

Meeting Start Change Proposal

A proposal was made to start our formal meetings in October rather than September. We agreed to put this announcement in the Newsletter and vote on the proposal at the November meeting.

At The Field
By Glenn Crocker

The weather has finally shut us down. The good planes are being winterized and the mudders are being readied in case there will be a few good days before snow flies. At least this year Charlie got his Indian summer.

The Titusville terror is back in Florida for the winter. I apologize to the Moonport Modelers for the lack of a warning. Walt has retrieved the Tom Brown doll out of summer storage and has begun to stick pins in it.

There was an event in Dave Beckwith’s new garage on the 25th of October. An engine demonstration was put on. This was the same person that brought his engines to our meeting a couple of years ago. He designs, machines and assembles his engines and they run as well as our purchased units. There were approximately 10 to 15 members in attendance. I would like to thank Jim McBride for setting up the demonstration and Dave Beckwith for providing a place to hold it.

If you fly, watch for the plane eating trees. They are bulking up this time of year.

Congratulations Dick and Peg Parshall

Dick and Peg Parshall celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary this month. An Anniversary party was hosted by their children to celebrate this event. We wish you many more happy years together.

Cutting holes in your covering job

Why would anyone want to make a hole in a nice new covering job? Holes for wing bolts, switches, hatch screws, and pushrod openings come to mind. You could cut the opening with an X-Acto knife or a razor blade, then you would have to adhere the fresh cut covering to the surrounding wood. The solution: get an old soldering iron tip (preferably pointed) and cut the opening with it. I use a 25 watt Weller, and it cuts thru the covering with ease, making a perfect seal. Once you try this, you won’t want to do it any other way. One word of caution: clean the tip after each cut. You can use a wet sponge. If you don’t clean the tip regularly, the burned covering will cake on, and not only will it smell, it will inhibit future cuts because it will not use maximum heat.

A Little Humor

A student pilot became lost during a solo cross-country flight. While attempting to locate the aircraft on radar, Air Traffic Control asked, "What was your last known position?"

The student replied. "When I was number one for takeoff"

Elections this Year

At our October meeting (which most of you ducked) the current officers with the exception of the secretary agreed to carry on for another term (so it’s safe to return).

John Street has been our secretary for the last 6 years and felt it was time for a change. The club thanks John for his support and a job well done.

We will be working to fill this position prior to the November meeting. So be very afraid to answer your phone.

Seriously the club cannot run on its own and needs the support of the members. Please consider accepting the position of Secretary if asked.

The hardest part of the job is attending meetings and listening to Charlie snore.

Deer Season

This is our annual reminder. Deer gun season begins on November 17th. For our safety we have not been flying during the gun season. We are asking that you not fly for the period from 11/17 to 12/9. Thanks for your support.

Dues are Due

This is the annual reminder that now is the time to renew your membership. The Treasurer would greatly appreciate your renewal by December 31 (this year).

If he does not receive your renewal by that date he will turn the matter over to Uncle Guido’s collection agency.

Thank you in advance for your prompt attention to this matter.

Flying season is official! Seems sad we have to wait until next spring to do it again. Harry, the Titusville Terror, Eric and Mel Gridley enjoying the afternoon.

Eighteen cylinder double row radial. Did not run this one. Rear view of the eighteen cylinder. Sure would look nice in a Corsair.
Small V-8 that did run. These things were amazing. Another view of the V-8
Five cylinder engine. It ran like a watch. Joe Prato was trying to stick it under his shirt for this winters project. Eric’s steam engine. Outstanding workmanship.
