September Skies

Well here it is, September. The summer is over and the fall flying season has begun. I think this summer will be remembered as a great one weather wise. We had lots of sunny days with low to moderate winds. I know some of you will complain it was too hot, but just remember that when you are complaining about having to shovel the snow.

The field has been in great shape thanks to our volunteer grounds crew and has had a lot of use. We had a great Club picnic with good weather and great food. It's great to see some of the members that are not at the field regularly. Hopefully Glenn will have some pictures. We had a good club turn out at the STARS Scale Rally in Olean and a few members were sighted at the Flying Knights Scale Rally in Hamburg as well as the Phelps fun Fly and the Chiefs Electric Fly In. I have one more meet to go to this month. The NEAT Fair in the Catskills. This is the largest electric meet in the northeast with lots of manufacturers and retailers showing off and selling the latest stuff. I'll be going with Eric and Jim. Hopefully we can avoid a hurricane this year, and just enjoy the show. I'll give you a report afterwards.

Personally, I had a great summer too. I got to do lots of flying at the field and on Canadice Lake. I did get some stuff done around the house, not everything my wife and I wanted, but a lot of it. My wife and I took a couple of short camping trips by ourselves and two with our youngest daughter. Oh, in case you missed it, I have been unemployed this summer and hanging out with the retired guys. Well, now it's time to get a job.

I thought about trying Kodak but getting laid off once was enough. I'll let you know how the job hunt goes.

Happy Landings!
Max

At The Field
By Glenn Crocker

Here we are well into September and we are still getting some days in the high 80s. The flying has been outstanding this year if you could stand the heat and humidity. Believe it or not it has been so hot at times Charlie has not wanted to fly. We have also had an active summer at the lake. We have been going two days a week (Tuesdays & Fridays) this year. Retrieving planes has not been as exciting as in the past due to the fact Max lent us a more stable boat. You can actually retrieve from the side of the boat.

Charlie did such a great job of picking the date for the GVAM picnic this year we are going to give him the job permanently. Not only did the sun shine but the wind gave us a break and we could fly all day. We had an excellent turnout. The official count was 45 people in attendance. There were many comments on the great variety of food available.

The electric gang is planning to head down state to attend the NEAT Fair. Hopefully they will not get flooded out again and have an enjoyable weekend. It will be interesting to hear of the new gadgets that have come out for electrics.

With the nice weather we will keep the shelters in place as long as we can.

I would like to thank the mowing volunteers for their efforts this year. The field is in the best shape is has ever been in. I would like to thank Abe Sickles who has kept the high grass mowed this summer. The gang mower probably felt left out but the new mower kept the grass so much shorter and did not take that much longer there was no need to use the big guy.

Take advantage of the fantastic flying weather because you know what comes next. We have been keeping the trees on a diet so let’s keep it that way for the rest of the season.

A Titusville Terror Alert

Be advised it is that time of year again and the Titusville Terror will be on his way back to Florida the end of October. We have made it thru another summer but Tom training has been tough so he is all yours for the winter.
He actually did fly this summer. His throttle stick thumb still needs work. It still wants to make a left turn just prior to landing.
